#5: TV Stands & Compatibilities - Why You Should Consider a Universal TV Stand

Posted by TV Parts Guy Team on 13th May 2015

Yesterday, we had received a number of calls from folks looking for a very particular TV Stand and that was a Sony TV Stand that fits the following models:

  • Sony KDL-46V3000
  • Sony KDL-46W3000
  • Sony KDL-46VL130
  • Sony KDL-46S3000

And it greatly saddened us that we had to tell her that we didn't have it at the immediate moment. She inquired whether we'll ever get this TV Stand in the foreseeable future and the truth of the matter was that it's hard to say. Now, we understand that our callers may have heard this or something similar before with other online retailers and we totally get the frustration. Those folks were probably thinking "Well, gosh darn it! When in the blue hell are they ever gonna get this TV stand? Isn't there some way that they can just "order" it from somewhere?" Well, it's not quite that simple. Let us explain.

When Sony made this TV, it came with the TV Stand in the retail box. Most folks don't think twice about keeping their original TV stand and would instead just toss it in the trash since they were planning to mount it to the wall to start with. Flash forward several years later. Their home is getting old, maybe the walls on which the TV hung onto was not what it used to be, and maybe they're worried that the TV might win the war with the wall, break off, and hurt someone. So they take it down and hope to find the OEM TV Stand somewhere on the internet for cheap. So they fire up their good ol' faithful (the desktop) and start searching for their TV Stand. First, they may have tried the big box retailers, i.e., BestBuy, Kmart, Target, etc and had no such luck. Next, they may have started checking out the major online retailers like Amazon, Newegg, MWave, and ran into the same wall. No luck. Lastly, they go through Google looking for any online retailer that has it, whether it's a smaller company like us or Joe-Schmoe that happens to have a used one in the local classifieds.

Now, Sony and just about any other TV manufacturer usually make their TV's in batches (and usually in the thousands to tens of thousands, depending on the market forecast, economy, and consumer demand), and they come with everything that you need right in the retail box: the TV, the TV Stand (w/ included hardware), the TV remote, the batteries, etc . And generally speaking, all the major brands carry a limited supply of their OEM stands at any given time. Smaller brands or the lesser known brands wouldn't carry this extra surplus of TV stands because it's not cost-effective for them. So the batch of TV's that they make and include in the retail box? That's it. That's all the TV stands that they'll ever make and they come with the retail box. So if you were trying to look for a TV stand from those brands, let's just say, you won't be able to get them directly from the manufacturer.

Given that, the same will also be true for the major brands, once the manufacturers run through their limited supply of TV Stands on hand. Once they run out, that's pretty much it. Hence, the catch-22. How does one find a TV stand for this older TV model of 8-10 years old, let's just say? The answer to that is companies like us who do all the homework for you and go through various channels to acquire them. We'll spare you the details of how we actually go about it but just know that it isn't an easy and simple process. In other words, we have to jump through lots of hoops and deal with lots of folks to gain the privilege, not necessarily the right, of acquiring these items. Between that and suggesting to our guests to seriously consider buying a Universal TV Stand, we would almost always suggest that, as opposed to getting the OEM Stands but only after making every effort to acquire them for our guests through our various channels first. But, at the same time, we also understand that there are genuine concerns by our guests about the stability, the reliability, and the price tag of said Universal TV Stands. We just want to make one thing clear though. It'll only get harder, thus requiring a longer wait time (weeks, or possibly even several months) before being able to acquire them and over time, these items will only get increasingly scarce.

"How about other TV stands that look like the OEM? Wouldn't they work?" we often hear our callers say. Actually, no they won't. When the manufacturers made these TV's, they only made them with the specific series that they had in mind to be included in the design, which is a fairly limited range, by the way.

Effectively then, it boils down to either buying OEM, which is in very limited supply, or buying a Universal TV Stand. And between the two, OEM will almost always cost more than buying a Universal TV Stand. And, on top of that, the manufacturers will make you buy the TV Stand by the piece, rather than as a whole. That means the neck of the stand, the base of the stand, and all the screws plus whatever else is needed will be charged separately. Ultimately, this would mean between spending $69 for a Universal TV Stand plus tax & shipping (about $20-25~, depending on the retailer) which will include all the hardware, the screws, and instructions on how to put it together, or spending $80+ or more (usually a lot more than this, roughly, $140~ would be considered "normal" for manufacturers to charge the general public to purchase their TV stands [usually the base piece is most expensive] individually) for an OEM TV Stand that may or may not include the instructions on who to put it together and that's not even including the shipping cost.

As you can see, the Universal TV Stand would be the more cost effective choice, all things considered. Interested in purchasing a Universal TV Stand today? Buy one by clicking here.
